12 healthy volunteers were given 4 mg of astaxanthin daily for 9 weeks. 11 were given a placebo. At the start, and after 9 weeks a piece of skin was irradiated with UV-light.
The skin of the astaxanthin group was significantly more resistant to the damaging effects of UV-light (as you can see in the image below).
‘MED’ means ‘Minimal Erythemal Dose’ and is the minimal amount of UV-light that induces visible reddening (sunburn). Higher is better.
“Dietary supplementation with astaxanthin might protect skin from damage caused by UV rays comparable to exposure to the sun for 1.5 h in the Japanese summer.”
“Because absorbed astaxanthin reaches the epidermis and dermis, it is assumed that astaxanthin directly exerts anti-oxidative activity at the epidermis and dermis to protect skin from UV-induced skin deterioration”
